In seinem Aufsatz As we may think entwirft Vannevar Bush mit Memex das Konzept eines universalen Gedächtnisspeichers: „A memex is a device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility. It is an enlarged intimate supplement to his memory.“ (Bush, „As we may think“, S. 106 f.). Obwohl in der vorgeschlagenen Weise nie im größeren Stil umgesetzt, bleibt Memex als Präfiguration der Hyperlink-Idee sowie aller späteren digitalen Lebens-Welt-Archive einer der folgenreichsten Impulse, den individuellen Kognitionsraum welt- und zeitpanoramatisch auszuweiten. – Johannes Ullmaier
